[Men's Cross Country] Cavs Compete in Shawnee at OBU Invite

Comments

SHAWNEE- On Saturday morning, the Cavaliers men's and women's cross country teams competed on home turf in Shawnee, at the OBU Invite meet. St. Gregory's women's team finished in eighth place, out of the eleven teams competing, and the men's team did not recieve a score, due to only having four runners healthy for the race.

Alexas Vargas finished first for the Cavs women's team, with a 21:15.84 finish in the 5 kilometer race. Kathleen Joyce finished close behind with a 21:59.18 time, and Sophia Weisbruch finished in 22:10.34.

Teagan Dreyer was one of the Cavs most important runners in the race, according to Chris Creal and Ben Dodson. Dreyer finished in 22:14.03, and Coach Creal said, " In my opinion, Teagan was the biggest highlight of our meet today.  She was very competitive as well as helped the women close up gaps in our pack.  This is so important as it will help us place better as a team when we get to conference."

When asked about the conditions of the course on Saturday, Coach Dodson said, " Overall the course was wet and muddy, which made it a slow race; however our girls went out and competed against a very competitive field and did well for the conditions."

On the men's side, Luis Lopez (JR/McAllen, Texas) led the Cavs with a 30:05.47 finish in the 8 kilometer race. Sager McCrary (FR/Conyers, GA) finished second for the Cavaliers with a 33:37.66 time, and Fernando Gonzalez (FR/Oklahoma City, Okla) finished in 34:11.97. Michael White (JR/Morgantown, WV) finished right behind Gonzalez with a time of 34:11.97.

The Cavaliers women and men were very appreciative of the support they recieved on Saturday morning, and the coaches had this to say,"On behalf of the whole team, we also like to thank the SGU community, family, and friends that came out to support us.  It is not often for us to compete in town but when we do it is nice for us to have a great fan base cheering us on."

The Cavaliers will be back in action on Oct. 21 when both teams travel to Winfield, Kan. to compete at the Mid-States Invite.
