[Women's Cross Country] Weisbruch and Vargas Lead Cavs at Mid-States Invite

Comments

WINFIELD, Kan.- The Cavaliers men's and women's cross country team competed in the Mid-States Invite hosted by Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan. The theme for all of the Cavaliers running, was crushing their previous personal best or season best times. The women's team finished with a seventh place finish out of the 19 teams competing, and the men's team received no score since only two athletes were able to run on Saturday morning.

Sophia Weisbruch (JR/Temple, Texas) and Alexas Vargas (SO/Terrell, Texas) were the Cavs first two finishers in 25th and 27th place, respectively. Weisbruch finished the 5 kilometer race in just 19:58.7, and Vargas finished only two seconds behind with a time of 20:00.1. Weisbruch's time was a person best by 7 seconds, and Vargas' time was a personal best by 5 seconds. Teresa Ambuul (SO/Colorado Springs, CO) ran a season best time, in 20:46.7, and Kathleen Joyce (SO/Edmond, Okla.) finished just behind her with a finish in 20:50.2. The time of 20:50.2 crushed Joyce's previous top time by 20 seconds. Araceli Flores (FR) clocked a good time for St. Gregory's as she crossed the finish in 22:33.1. Samantha Gonzalez crushed her previous best time by finishing the race in 24:54.8.

Luis Lopez led the men's team in the 8 kilometer race, with his 58th place finish in 28:00.8. Lopez's time was his personal best by an impressive 1:05. Michael White also ran well for the SGU men and finished the race in 31:52.7. This was the first time that White has finished in under 32 minutes.

Cavs women's coach, Ben Dodson, was extremely pleased with both teams performance today, and said," Today has to be one of the best showings in the history of the program. Luis, and Mike stepped up and ran at the next level.  They all have been training hard and today showed what they are capable of."

Chris Creal, the men's head coach reitterated the praises for the squad as he said," The men and women did more than surpassed expectations, they shattered physical and mental barriers today.  Very rarely as a coach, do you have every runner on the whole team run personal best and season best at the same meet, so to have this happen is truly something special.  I am a firm believer that today's success is correlated to their continuous trust and faith in the training as well as one another. I could not be more proud to be a part of this program and it's success."

The Cavaliers next action will come on Sat., Nov. 4, when they host and compete in the SAC Championships that are being held in Shawnee.
