[Women's Cross Country] Vargas Leads Cavs to Fifth Place Finish at Tabor College Invite

Comments
MARION, Kan.- The Cavaliers women's cross country team competed very strong at the Tabor College Invite on Saturday morning. As a team, the Cavs finished in fifth place, but the highlight of the 5K race was Alexas Vargas (SO/Terrell, Texas)' award-winning race.

Vargas led the team in the race, as she finished in seventh place overall out of 56 competitors, with a time of 20:39.7. Kathleen Joyce (SO/Edmond, Okla.) ran a strong race with a 21:39 finish, and Sophia Weisbruch (JR/Temple, Texas) finished shortly after her with a 22:04.4 finish. Teagan Dreyer (SR/OKMULGEE, OK) also placed in the top 30, with a time of 22:14.1. Samantha Gonzalez finished the race with a 25:48.4 time.

The Tabor College Invite was the team's first meet with Ben Dodson as the program's new head coach, and he had this to say on Vargas' strong race, "Alexas did a great job leading the women's team today.  She got out and just competed, which led her to one of her best finishes in her college career."

Coach Chris Creal also chimed in on how the Cavs competed as a team, saying, "We were hoping to finish a little higher in the team rankings, but we also have been focusing on training through this week to better prepare for the last half of our season.  The competition at this meet was perfect for us to test where we are as a team right now."

St. Gregory's women's cross country team will compete next at the OBU Invite in Shawnee, on Oct. 7.
